My dog has protein source food allergies so I am always looking for different alternatives. What treats do you recommend for his sensitive digestive system?

Linda,
More and more pet owners are looking for alternative proteins for dogs with food allergies. This is becoming a serious concern for customers as they witness their dog suffering from allergic reactions such as irritable bowel, upset stomach and a number of skin problems. Food allergies usually develop from proteins that we habitually serve our pups for long periods of time before the symptoms occur. As one of the most frequently utilized protein sources in the pet industry, chicken is the most likely culprit in most cases. Thankfully, dog treat manufacturers are looking to other meats to develop healthy recipes for canines with unique dietary needs.

The most important factors in selecting a new treat for your picky pup are the lead protein and the simplicity of formulation. Always look for treats with limited ingredient decks. One popular protein alternative is venison, although it can be difficult to find due to recent shortages in the industry. Tried and true formulas include Northern Biscuits Venison Stew and Zukes Venison Z-Filets.

If you have trouble getting your hands on venison treats, I often recommend fish dog treats such as Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Fish or Fromm Salmon & Sweet Potato. Fish is a commonly overlooked and underrated ingredient but it has vast health benefits due to high levels of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, which is essential to skin & coat health.

Another non-traditional protein source is buffalo (also called bison), which is similar in composition to beef but with some unique health benefits. Buffalo is not only lower in fat and cholesterol than beef but also higher in protein, amino acids, and omega fatty acids. Plus, most buffalo is raised free-range and pasture-fed in the United States. Primal Pet Roasted Buffalo Chunks, Evangers Buffalo Jerky or Northern Biscuits Grain-Free Grilled Bison & Blueberry Biscuits are all viable options.

If you prefer to stay in the poultry family, Duck is another protein that is great for dogs with food allergies. Leaner than most red meat, duck is also high in niacin, an essential B vitamin that helps regulate cholesterol. Start with Stella & Chewy’s Carnivore Crunch Duck Treats, Plato Thinkers Natural Duck Strips, or Natural Balance Potato & Duck Roll.

If you’re feeling even more adventurous, give Tripe or Kangaroo a try. With so many different protein options available now, you’re sure to find a healthy snack for your dog’s sensitive stomach. Happy hunting!
